Simple Daily Habits That Protect Your Comfort and Your Device

Your prosthesis is more than a device, it’s part of how you move through life. Just like any high-performance equipment, it works best when properly cared for.

The good news? Most prosthetic maintenance comes down to simple daily habits.

At Gulf Prosthetics, we believe that proper care prevents problems, extends the life of your device, and protects your skin.

Here’s what every prosthetic user should know.

  • Your socket and liner come into contact with your skin every day. Sweat, bacteria, and debris can build up quickly.

    What to do:

    • Clean your liner daily with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water

    • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue

    • Allow the liner to fully air dry before wearing again

    • Wipe the inside of your socket with a damp cloth and let it dry overnight

🚫 Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners, or abrasive scrubbers unless directed by your prosthetist.

  • Healthy skin is critical to successful prosthetic use.

    Best practices:

    • Wash your residual limb daily with mild soap

    • Dry completely — especially in folds or creases

    • Inspect for redness, blisters, or irritation

    • Apply a light, non-greasy moisturizer at night (not right before wearing your prosthesis)

If redness lasts longer than 20–30 minutes after removing your prosthesis, contact our office.

Small skin issues become big problems when ignored.

  • You don’t need to be a technician — just be aware.

    Look for:

    • Cracks in the socket

    • Loose screws or unusual noises

    • Worn foot tread

    • Fraying straps or sleeves

    • Changes in fit or comfort

If something feels “off,” it probably is. Call us before it turns into a larger repair.

  • Your residual limb naturally fluctuates in size due to:

    • Activity level

    • Weather

    • Diet and hydration

    • Weight changes

You may need to adjust sock ply throughout the day. Never force your limb into the socket if it feels too tight.

Consistent fit = better comfort + fewer skin issues.

  • We understand the temptation. But tightening bolts, modifying components, or making adjustments yourself can compromise safety and void warranties.

If your device needs repair or adjustment, let us handle it.

    Your safety always comes first.

  • Even if everything feels fine.

    We recommend:

    • A check-in 1–2 weeks after delivery

    • A 6-month evaluation

    • An annual assessment

Preventative maintenance saves time, money, and frustration.

  • Contact us if you experience:

    • Persistent pain

    • Open wounds or skin breakdown

    • Sudden looseness or instability

    • Cracking sounds or component failure

    • Major changes in fit

Early intervention keeps you moving safely.
